I have always been obsessed with any kind of stationery and trying any and all creative outlets and mediums that I can get my hands on. It was during my time at Uni that I discovered my love of watercolour. I was doing some multimedia projects with markers, which had always been a favourite. It was crunch time and trying for smooth blends, get a colour value that I wanted, needing a colour between two colours… was frustrating and not easily achievable and was only slowing me down. I went out to the arts and crafts store for some inspiration and bought a Winsor Newton Cotman set. The next thing I knew, I had been officially bitten by the watercolour bug and my box of paint was overflowing with brands, pans and tubes. I still like to try new supplies and visit old friends, but watercolour is definitely my comfort blanket of art supplies.
From the time I could first hold a crayon I have been writing stories and doodling. There is still a long way to go in my journey, but my style has remained the same at its core. My art has always leaned toward cartoony, illustrative, and like my humour, a little bit dark.
My inspirations growing up were varied. Richard Scarry and the wonders of his anthropomorphic characters bustlingly about in their busy busy world, Edward Gorey’s beautiful black and white illustrations that covered the books in my mother’s horror library, Faeries by Brian Froud and Alan Lee filled my imagination to the brim with mythical and fantastical, And the one that trumped them all, Sanrio; so many characters, simple designs, multifunctional gadgets and STATIONERY!!!
